Approve Letter in Opposition to Sonar and Explosives Training and Testing in the Pacific Ocean off the Coast of Northern California by the Navy

Summary

The U.S. Navy has prepared a draft supplement to the 2015 Northwest Training and Testing Final Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/OEIS). Public meetings were held at locations up and down the coast to provide information and answer questions. By all accounts, the meeting held locally on May 3, 2019, was not well received by community members who attended.

The Navy proposes to continue the use of active and passive sonar and explosives in their training and testing activities. The Navy acknowledges that marine mammals, certain species of fishes, sea turtles, birds as well as American Indian and Alaska Native traditional resources may be impacted by continued testing and training exercises and that these impacts combine with past, present and future actions.

The revised letter attached, opposes passive and active sonar and explosives testing and training in the ocean off the coast of Northern California. Comments to the Final Supplemental EIS/OEIS must be received or postmarked by June 12, 2019.
