Approve City Council Letter in Support of Senate Bill 212

Summary

The Election Review Committee has recommended that the City Council submit a letter in support of Senate Bill 212.  SB 212 authorizes general law cities, general law counties and school districts to utlize two majority-winner voting methods for local elections:  a two-round runoff and ranked choice voting.  This bill could provide Fort Bragg with the option of implementing either of these voting methods without having to establish a Charter City.  Nothing in the support of this bill advocates for implementing a change in voting method but it provides the city more options, if it is determined by the City Council that either a two-round runoff or ranked choice voting is the prefered system.  At this time, the Election Review Committee makes no recommendation regarding a preferred election system but does support having more options available as a general law city.
