Adopt by Title Only and Waive Second Reading of Ordinance No. 942-2018 Adding Chapter 9.61 [Shopping Carts] to Title 9 [Public Peace, Safety, and Morals] of the Fort Bragg Municipal Code Regarding the Regulation of Shopping Carts

Summary

On September 24, 2018, the City Council of the City of Fort Bragg is to consider adoption of Ordinance No. 942-2018, said ordinance having been introduced for first reading (by title only and waiving further reading of the text) on September 10, 2018.

The proposed ordinance regarding the regulation of shopping carts adds Chapter 9.61 [Shopping Carts] to Title 9 [Public Peace, Safety and Morals] of the Fort Bragg Municipal Code. The proposed Ordinance provides the Police Department with the option of enforcing both State and local law against persons illegally in possession of a shopping cart. The Ordinance also places responsibility on vendors to clearly identify their property and assist in educating customers and employees that removal of shopping carts is illegal. The purpose of the Ordinance is to reduce the number of carts stolen from local businesses, provide a mechanism for prompt retrieval, and clean up the City’s streets, parks, waterways and empty lots of abandoned shopping carts.

If adopted, Ordinance No. 942-2018 will become effective November 23, 2018.
