Title
Adopt City Council Resolution Approving a Records Retention Schedule

Summary
The Fort Bragg City Council adopted Resolution 2375-2000 on June 12, 2000, adopting the Local Government Records Retention Guidelines ("Guidelines") as prepared by the City Clerk's Association of California (August 1999) and as approved by the State Legislature as Senate Bill 742, for use in the City of Fort Bragg.  The Guidelines include a number of categories that do not apply in the City of Fort Bragg (such as airports, fire department records (our fire department is a separate entity), and ports ).

It has long been the desire of the City Clerk to prepare a customized Records Retention Schedule ("Schedule")  for the City of Fort Bragg.  Using the Guidelines as a starting point and retention schedules from other cities, a customized Schedule has been completed and, following review by all Department Managers, it is ready for adoption by the City Council.

The Schedule establishes the minimum retention schedule for documents.  The City retains the right to retain public records and documents in excess of the minimum legal requirements when it is found that it is in the best interests of the City to do so because of operational, financial or historical needs.  Written consent is required from the City Clerk and City Attorney prior to destruction of records pursuant to this Schedule.
